Win a Copy of Hoopla!
Monday, April 2, 2012This week we’re giving away two (2) copies of Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery, written and compiled by Leanne Prain. This fun, unique book includes twenty-eight innovative embroidery patterns and profiles of contemporary embroidery artists.
Hoopla showcases those who take the craft of embroidery where it’s never gone before, in an astonishing, full-color display of embroidered art. Hoopla rebels against the quaint and familiar embroidery motifs of flowers and swashes, and focuses instead on innovative stitch artists who specialize in unusual, guerrilla-style patterns such as a ransom note pillow or bug-infested doily; it demonstrates that modern embroidery artists are as sharp as the needles with which they work.
One copy will be given away here on the blog, and the other on our FaceBook site.
To win, simply leave a message here on the blog or on our Facebook page, telling us about the most unusual, rebellious or subversive project you have stitched using DMC Embroidery Threads.
The winners will be chosen and posted later this week.
I can hardly wait to read your comments!

I love doing all kinds of needle work, from crewel to cross stitch!
The book looks fascinating.
I made a sugar skull rag doll for Day of the Dead. She is awesome!
I’ve embroidered on a window screen (long ago). Right now I’m having fun embroidering on souvenir postcards.
I stitched a mad hatter image based on an old Alice in Wonderland book plate. Beautiful
Well the most rebellious I have stiched is Looney Tunes!
I need some stitch inspiration ~ Please.
I’ve embroidered a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt about peace.

I tried to stitch what was suppose to be a small dog and it turned out looking like a cow with some shaky legs
I crossed stitch a baby record for my grandson on an RV trip through Alaska – “washboard roads” and all!
I stitched my 3 year old grandson The Yellow Submarine because that is the theme in his bedroom.
I cross stitched a native american wedding sampler for my youngest son, who just got married. I had never done beading before, and took a chance and paid off. It came it great..
The best thing I ever stitched was a train engine on linen—-unusual because I had never stitched on linen before. It turned out awesome and can’t wait to do the others in the same book.
I’d love to win this book, so will keep my fingers crossed.
I stitched on waffled paper to make mailable Christmas stockings. So very cool! Love my DMC threads–have even dyed them with Procion MX dyes. They took the dye very well

I made my brother three hoop pictures with a dauschound (sp?) in each picture and a little boy with one and his dog was on a leash. I don’t know that they were rebellious or not, but I did know his wife wouldn’t let him hang them in their house and he would have to hang them at his fishing camp. So, in a way it was rebellious!
Not exactly stitching but when my daughter was young I used to use DMC floss to wrap tiny braids in her hair and I would wrap her school pencils. There was a way that I could wrap using different colors and weaving them so her name would show up on the pencil or I could do designs on her hair braids. It was very popular back in the 80′s.
Ive only stitched on fabric and paper so far. But I always love to see what others get up to. Id soooo love a copy of the book.
I just got into hoop embroidery so haven’t done anything “subversive” there yet, but I do use DMC floss when I make small felt toys. The latest was a version of Winter (the dolphin who inspired the movie “Dolphin Tail”–dolphin with a prosthetic tail). I also use it to make facial features on a lot of the dolls and toys I make (including my conjoined twin sock monkeys).
I’m making a Minecraft Creeper for my son!
Stitching on Barbie doll clothes is about as crazy as I have gotten with my sitiching so far.
First subversive was a pigeon on a post from the book English Garden Embroidery by Stafford Whiteaker using DMC Art. 117 on 34 count Oaten Scone by Legacy Linen finished as a little wall hanging, and the second was an Internet freebie of a green car (1957 Chevy, I think)from Ann Logan on 28 Count Cashel using DMC Art. 117. This one is framed. Both have that popular quote by Anonymous–”Chill the #$@& Out” using an alphabet from Cross Stitch Letters Bible by Valerie LeJeune.
I stitched a friendship pillow that said “Friends Don’t Let Friends Eat All the Chocolate.”
I haven’t stitched anything crazy yet … but I follow completely cauchy, mr. x stitch and subversive cross stitch. It’s only a matter of time …
Thank you for the giveaway!
The most UNUSUAL project I have ever embroidered was: when my husband was in the Navy and away on active duty, I embroidered cute little things on the fronts of all his undies (briefs) that he had left behind! What a surprise he got when he returned and started wearing them!! LOL
I make funky artsy scarves with the thread so can’t wait to try the memory thread! WOuld love the book!
I am currently stitching a zombie burlesque girl with DMC threads from one of my favorite cross-stitching books ever, “Twisted Stitches.” It is definitely the most unusual thing so far.
