Repurposed Embroidery Ideas
Tuesday, December 27, 2011Displaying vintage or new embroidery projects in new and inventive ways can really liven things up. Creating a one-of-a-kind display, upholstered furniture piece or accent pillows like these adds color and interest to an otherwise boring room.
This awesome idea posted by Design Sponge uses an embroidered Mexican folk dress as upholstery on an old chair. This idea is not only functional, but chic and hip as well.
Its creator, Katie Steuernagle, purchased an old chair for $5 at a yard sale and turned it into a beautiful interior accent for next to nothing!
If you don’t have a folk dress, use a tablecloth or bedspread – you may even get two chairs out of it.

This grouping of wall art by Bylina Studio uses snippets and corners of vintage embroidered linens.
Displaying them in hoops is a terrific way to show off what’s left of a vintage piece that is too damaged to be enjoyed for its original use.
Mellymellun has taken a collection of small vintage embroidery motifs and turned them into this very feminine patchwork pillow.
If you have a collection of small doilies or embroidered handkerchiefs you’ve had stashed for a while, this is the perfect project for using them to create something fresh and exciting.
We’d love to hear your ideas for repurposing old or vintage embroidery items too – feel free to share them with us!

I’m looking for the embroidery material that you slide the floss underneath the threads to fill in the pattern. I remember making a dresser scarf with a rose pattern this way.
Sounds like huck toweling or monk’s cloth. There are many sites carrying it, and a quick search through Google using the keyworks “Huck Toweling,” “Monks Cloth” and “Swedish Weaving” revealed several good sources including Nordic Needle and Monk’s CLoth & More. ~Emma
