Inspiration from CHA

Monday, February 7, 2011

Hi All,

I wanted to share some really awesome inspiration from last week’s CHA Trade Show with you! CHA is an acronym for the Craft and Hobby Association, a trade association consisting of thousands of companies engaged in the design, manufacture, distribution and retail sales of hobby products in the US. Each year CHA hosts 2 conferences, and we just returned from the Winter Conference, held in Los Angeles.

The DMC booth featured mixed media vignettes created by Barbara Willis, Lisa Kettell, Susan Elliot, Anne Burg and Patti Culea (meet the artists) using assorted DMC Threads including Color Infusions threads and Memory Thread.

Three of the  featured vignettes were hanging Lanterns and two were Shadow Boxes – each incorporating a wide variety of design elements, thread, and creative spark!

The lanterns featured fairies and fantasy flowers. Barbara Willis’s Lantern is shown upper left, and Lisa Kettell’s is shown lower left.

Lisa has shared her instructions for creating a Floss Party Fairy Project Sheet so you can create a floss fairy (or two) too!

The fairy uses Memory Thread, DMC Embroidery Floss, DMC Light Effects Metallic Patti Thread and DMC Tapestry wool, and is stitched on 14-count Aida Fabric. The figure uses a clay pixie doll head (available from Lisa), beads, wire, felt and paint as well as a few other basic supplies.

The detail of Patti Culea’s Lantern, upper right, shows her lovely, red-headed seated fairy.  There is so much detail in these lanterns,  I could stare at them for hours and still not see everything!

Shadow Boxes are also super-popular, and we featured one from Anne Burg containing fabulous flower fairies (far left).

The box from Susan Elliot (near left) contained the Alice in Wonderland block I showed you a while back. It’s such a wonderful way to finish – and protect – the block!
