Today we’re going to mark the pattern for the August Flower needlepoint pattern on the needlepoint canvas, and start stitching!
Begin by printing out the full-size pattern.
Place the canvas on a flat surface vertically, having the long edges along the top and bottom and the short edges of the canvas to the sides.
Trace the main design of the pattern onto the canvas using a water-proof marker (I used an Extra-Fine Point Sharpie), spacing it about 4 inches from the top edge. Trace the flower center below the main design spacing it 5 inches from the main design.
Following the manufacturer’s directions for your particular scroll frame, load the canvas into the frame and make sure the canvas in taunt.
Stitch the large, diagonal petals with the #353 pearl cotton using the Checkered Scotch Stitch and a tapestry needle. Work slightly into the flower center – this will ensure that no blank canvas is showing after attaching the flower center.
When you are stitching near the side highlights of the petal, do not extend into the highlight – instead, use stitch compensation in this area. Stitch the petal highlights using color #4190 DMC Color Variations pearl cotton.
The photo detail to the left shows the compensation stitches worked on the petals. Perfection is not necessary!
The background area should extend 4 stitches beyond the smaller petals (these are closest to the outside edges).
In a few days, we’ll be ready to work the flower center, and frame out the petals with DMC Color Infusions Memory Thread!
Meanwhile, Happy Stitching!
