Free Pattern – Autumn Mug Mats in Wool Applique!
Tuesday, September 7, 2010A few weeks ago I blogged some inspiration for Autumn Wool Applique.
Well, today I’ve posted a brand-new freebie pattern for you to try, and added the Blanket Stitch to my list of stitch diagrams, so you can try wool applique!
You can get the free pattern for the leaf appliques here.
The project is quick too – you can have a set of 4 mug mats ready to use or give as a gift in less than a day!
The leaves are stitched in place on 3″ felted wool squares in DMC Six-Strand Floss. The stems are embroidered in chain stitch, also using 6-strand floss.
I used an asssortment of fall-colored wool, as well as an assortment of colored threads in my project – and the leaf veining is in a different color of thread than the blanket stitch applique, just for fun!
Once you have appliqued the leaf shapes to the squares in blanket stitch, applique the leaf square to a slightly larger square with pinked edges to make a sturdy, double-layered mug mat.
After that, the only thing you need to do is brew your favorite hot beverage, sit back in your favorite chair with your latest project in your hands, and watch the leaves outside change color!

These are wonderful – and I do love leaves. I might have to do these in needlepoint, including the blanket stitch outline. LOVE the colors!!
