Emma’s Helpful Hints: Proper Pattern Printing

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Hi All! Emma Broidery here with a handy hint to make your stitching life easier!

Many of the patterns featured here on the blog need to be printed full-size to be usable, including the Needlepoint Stitch Along project.

Since many printers automatically default to page scaling, I thought it would be important to show you how to bypass this feature when printing the patterns.

Otherwise, you can end up with an inaccurate, shrunken pattern!

I’m using the August Flower project pattern as an example. The actual pattern can be found here.

Please note that the instructions and images shown below may be different for your printer – every printer is different! When in doubt, please refer to your owner’s manual.

To print the pattern full size, open the pattern and select PRINT from your menu.  Under the OPTIONS section, you should see the selections  FIT TO PAGE and DO NOT SCALE.

PRINT TO PAGE is often the default and is automatically selected – unselect this option and instead choose DO NOT SCALE.

If you do not see a screen similar to this one, select the SETUP button and you should be brought to a new screen with tabs.

Under the PRINTING PREFERENCES tab, the option for SCALE TO PAPER SIZE may be selected by default.

Unselect this option by instead selecting PRINT ACTUAL SIZE.

By printing the patterns from this – and other sites – correctly, you will be assured that your project is being worked to the proper scale.

Just a helpful little tip from Emma!

I always wondered how to do that. Especially for quilting patterns. Thanks for the hints.
