Stitch Along with Emma – Needlepoint, Part 3

Friday, August 6, 2010

We’re almost finished with the August Flower needlepoint project!

Today we’re going to frame the petals with DMC Color Variations Memory Thread, finish the flower center and attach it to the flower.

Work the flower center in Basketweave Stitch using the Color Variations Pearl Cotton in color #4075 and a tapestry needle.

Next, remove the canvas from the scroll frame.

Trim away the canvas around the main design 1.5 inches from the edges of the stitching.

Trim away the canvas around the edges of the flower center 1 inch from the edges of the stitching.

Now we’re going to apply the DMC Color Variations Memory Thread around the edges of each petal.

Use one strand of the pink 6-strand floss in your embroidery needle and attach the Memory Thread around the edges  with the Couching Stitch, using one continuous length Memory Thread.

To finish the flower center, place the cardboard circle in the center of the wrong side of the flower center.

Using the same DMC pearl cotton you used to stitch the flower center and a tapestry needle, work a row of running stitch around the edges of the circle, spacing them 1/2 inch from the raw edges of the canvas.

Pull the thread to gather the needlework around the cardboard circle and fasten the thread securely.

You can also take a few extra stitches across the back side of the circle to help secure and center the circle on the cardboard.

Using a single strand of the yellow (color #727) DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Floss, attach the flower center using a small, hidden whip stitch.

VoilĂ ! You can now finish the design as you choose –frame it, use it as a pocket on your favorite beach tote, or sew a pillow!

Happy Stitching!

~Emma
