New Contest – Design an Easter Egg!

Friday, February 18, 2011

Spring is almost here, and to celebrate the end of winter, DMC is sponsoring an Easter Egg Challenge!

To enter, design and stitch and original Easter Egg between now and March 31st.

Then, submit a photograph of the finished project along with a description of the threads, techniques and stitches via email (click the link, and please limit the file size of your photo to 4 mb!).

All designs entered must be original (not adapated from someone else’s design), and non-published (including print and web).

The Easter Eggs can be ornaments, framed art, embroidered on ready-made CharlesCraft items (such as towels, bookmarks or aprons), 3-dimensional or flat, wearable art, ornaments, framed or stuffed – whatever your heart desires and your imagination can create!

Techniques used can include cross stitch, embroidery, blackwork, quilting and appliqué, knitting or crochet, tatting or needlepoint. Embellishments such as beads, buttons and charms can be used as well.

Threads used in the Easter Egg must be exclusively from the DMC Embroidery Threads collection, and include at least two (2) types of DMC thread.

Threads used can be any combination of our embroidery floss, pearl cotton, Color Variations threads, Tapestry Wool, Light Effects, Satin Floss, Color Infusions Memory Thread, crochet threads, or our line of Machine Embroidery Threads.

There will be three (3) winners in this competition.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a selection of one each of our DMC Embroidery Floss – that includes 454 solid colors and 18 variegated colors! The winner will also have the pattern for their design featured on this blog.

Two Runners-Up will each received a DMC Specialty Thread Pack, and will have their designs featured as well.

I will post entries as they are received, and the designs will be judged on originality, creative use of DMC Threads, the oohs-and-ahhs we get from blog readers like you!

For inspiration, check out the embellished Easter Egg project from DMC (shown top left) embellished with DMC Memory Thread, the needlepoint egg ornaments from About.com (shown upper right) and hand embroidered Easter Egg made by Mary Corbet (shown left).

The entries are due by March 31st via email and the winners will be announced on April 8th.

Good luck to all – and let the contest begin!

~Emma

Lovely, but I’m guessing it is only for American stitchers???

I own all the DMC standard floss colors. I only wish I owned a few creative brain cells too. This is a great contest. Love the 3D egg.

Hi Marian – the contest is indeed open to everyone (but should not be confused with ordering from the DMC-US web site, which is for US orders only).

Does the design have to be a certain size? Thanks Amy

Can I use Perle cotton to needlepunch? I love to punch with #5. I have a couple of ideas, but wondering if I can use this technique with one of my thread choices.
    Thanks!

Deb, you can use any technique you choose! But, please do use a minimum of 2 different types of DMC thread – it’s one of the judging criteria.

By two different types of DMC does that mean – ie. embroidery floss and satin floss? or can it be a variety of colors of embroidery threads?

Hi Loretta – two different types of thread, in any color technique of your choosing. It needn’t be equal amounts of each type – you could accent a small area with Satin Floss, embroider an eye with pearl cotton, outline an area with Memory Thread, etc.
-By the way, Color Variations Floss is considered a different thread product than our regular 6-strand floss solid floss (same thing with the #5 Pearl in regular solid colors and the Variations line). Have fun – I can hardly wait to see your design! ~Emma

    Hi!
I sent to you my Hungarian Easter Egg, and more Easter Eggs. I used two colors (dark red and black).

    Hi Maria,
An email had been sent to you – we saw that 2 colors of thread were used, but two different types of DMC thread needed to be used (example, 6-strand floss and pearl cotton used in the project). Please let me know if 2 types were used. Thank you. ~Emma
